The tennis court oath occurred when the national assembly tried to meet in 1789 and the king locked them out of where they were supposed to meet. So they went down to the tennis courts and met there instead. The Oath showed for the first time that French citizens stood against king Louis XVI, and the National Assembly's refusal to back down forced the king to make changes. 577 of the 578 members from the Third Estate took a united oath "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until a new constitution is established.”( The only person who did not join was Joseph Martin-Dauch from Castelnaudary, who would only execute decisions made by the king) The tennis court oath paved the way for many more revolutionary events to come such as the 26 August 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, and the ending of feudalism (the estates) on august 4.
