The Louisiana purchase was the purchase of the Louisiana territory which was 828,000 square miles by the United States from France in 1803. The U.S. paid $11,250,000 and a cancellation of debts $3,750,000 for a total of $15,000,000 or around a quarter of a billion in 2016 dollars which. Napoleon’s reason for selling this territory was that there were some revolts going on and he couldn’t deal with revolts in north America and the upcoming war against Great Briton so he had to sell it or send more soldiers to stop the revolts, also with the upcoming war against Great Briton, Napoleon needed money for weapons and troops. At first Thomas Jefferson didn’t even want to buy the territory and only wanted the port of Louisiana for 10,000,000 but gladly accepted all of the Louisiana territory for 15,000,000. Napoleon used all this money to fund his army and navy for his plans to invade Great Briton
